Eighth  Grade Students

2020 - 2021 Summer Reading Assignment

Welcome to Summer Reading Assignments for students entering eighth grade! My wish is for each of my students to become stronger and more capable readers, writers, and thinkers.  Reading is an enjoyable pastime which improves your ability to be successful in your further education and your careers.  

Students entering eighth grade will read  Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan. This novel discusses overcoming obstacles, acceptance, and celebrating differences.

While reading the novel, please keep a reading journal in your Google Docs which includes the following for each chapter:

 ? -Write a question that you have about the text.

 ! -Make a comment about important events you see in the novel or a strong feeling you have towards a scene.

 = - A personal connection which you have with the text.

 P -Prediction you want to make about what will happen in the next chapter.

S –Summarize what is happening in each chapter with 3-4 sentences

Who is the main protagonist of Counting by 7s?

How were you first introduced to Willow?

What do you learn about her?

How does she view herself?

How would you describe her personality?

Your Thoughts! (Choose three of the questions below to answer about the book.

Remember to write in complete sentences. Essay responses should be 1 to 2 paragraphs in length (each paragraph containing 5 - 6 sentences.) Reading journals will be due the first Friday after returning to school (9/4/20). Once school begins, students may be required to complete additional assignments/projects based on their summer reading book.

  1. Compare this book to others you have read.  Is it similar to any of them? Did you like it more or less than other books you have read?  Why or why not? Provide details and your reasoning.
  2. What do you think will be your lasting impression of the book?  What will be your most vivid memories of it a year from now? Provide details and your reasoning.
  3. What “touched” you most about this book?  Did you feel any emotions while you read this?  Why or why not? Provide details and your reasoning.
  4. If you could jump in at any point in this book, and become a part of the story line, where would it be? Provide details and your reasoning.
  5. Were you sorry the book ended?  Why or why not? Provide details and your reasoning.
  6. Sometimes authors have notes at the end of the book explaining why they wrote the story.  Is there information explaining why the author wrote this story or where they got their idea?  What do you think? Provide details and your reasoning.
  7. What do you think the author was trying to accomplish with this novel?  Why? Provide details and your reasoning.
  8. Are any of the events in the book relevant to your own life?  Why or why not? Provide details and your reasoning.
  9. Think about the book’s title. Provide details and your reasoning to explain why you think the author chose the words in this title.
