This school year, there was an emphasis on improving our basic literacy/study skills. It was kicked off by an introduction to the “growth mindset” which simply states that “… I can achieve anything with effort and the right attitude.” Then we reviewed a wide range of skills from alphabetical order, parts of the book, classic authors/illustrators, distinguishing fiction from nonfiction, elements of literature, and monthly bulletin board topics.
From September to mid-October, we explored Hispanic culture, while during the Thanksgiving season, we reflected with gratitude for all the people who enrich our lives. After the December holidays, famous Peacemakers such as Jesus Christ and Martin Luther King, Jr were discussed. The following month, African American History Month, the students were reminded of the splendid achievements of memorable historic African Americans. Then in March, we talked about the women activists of the past as well as outstanding women achievers of today. As the school year concludes, we will be reviewing folk tale genres.
